Collection: Martine Rose

It was Michelle, Martine’s big sister who (dressed in Hamnett and Gaultier) took her out in London in the 80’s and showed her all the musical subcultures and their dress codes that would later show up in Martine’s collections: oversized silhouettes, logotypes and sportswear. A background at Camberwell College of arts started her special interest in proportions which would later be realized in unordinary tailored jackets and humongous pants. Fashion studies at Middlesex University and a brand named LMNOP followed before Martine Rose started her eponymous brand in 2007. Forced, but also inclined, to deviate from regular fashion seasons and traditional runway locations, Martine Rose has instead shown her gorpcore, bomber jackets and iconic football shirts through films, lookbooks, in gyms and on dead-end streets with models literally taken off the streets. Always with a reference to music and her Jamaican ancestry, and without a clear target group in mind. Winner of the GQ Award for menswear, collabs with Nike and Napapijri and consulting designer at Balenciaga are all proof of her special talent in creating a modern, cheeky underdog “dad style” which is more and more worn by women.
